Lahore, March 15, 2022 (PPI-OT):After enactment of GI Act in 2020, registering Basmati rice as first ever GI of Pakistan in 2021 and notifying 65 potential GIs, now Pakistan is taking off to join Lisbon Agreement (Geneva Act) for international registration of GIs.
In this connection, second consultative session was held here on 14th March at PC, Lahore. Ms Shazia Adnan, Director General, IPO-Pakistan chaired the session and upraised the participants about benefits of the Lisbon Agreement. Mr. Muhammad Ismail, Director IPO-Pakistan presented the procedure for joining the Agreement. A number of participants from business community, lawyers’ fora and academia participated in the session.
With the accession to the Lisbon Agreement, Pakistan will be able to protect its GIs in more than 80 countries by filing a single application at WIPO whereby facilitating ease of doing business. Indigenous products of Pakistan will get premium price in the international market. Our national products e.g. Basmati Rice, Pink Salt, Hunza Apricot, Chaunsa Mango, Sindhi Ajrak, Ziarat Cherry, Peshawari Chapal, Kinnow (citrus) etc. will be introduced in the international market as national brands of Pakistan
