Islamabad: The Pakistan-Portugal Parliamentary Friendship Group convened today at the SDGs Secretariat, Parliament House, aiming to enhance diplomatic and economic relations between the two countries. The session was led by Syed Ali Qasim Gillani, MNA and convener of the group, with discussions centered on increasing trade, cultural exchanges, and strengthening diplomatic ties.
According to National Assembly of Pakistan, attendees included key parliamentary members and diplomats such as the Portuguese Ambassador to Pakistan, Mr. Frederico Pinheiro da Silva, and Pakistan’s Ambassador to Portugal. Senior officials from Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Ministry of Commerce also provided updates on current trade dynamics, underscoring the importance of expanding economic links between the nations.
During the meeting, Mr. Gillani extended a personal invitation to Ambassador da Silva to visit Multan, emphasizing the significance of personal connections in fostering bilateral relationships. Discussions also included proposals to increase trade volume and facilitate regular parliamentary exchanges to deepen diplomatic engagements.
Mr. Gillani proposed hosting a Mango Festival in Lisbon to promote Pakistani mangoes, highlighting the country’s status as a top mango producer. He also mentioned Pakistan’s global reputation for producing high-quality footballs, suggesting potential areas for increased trade cooperation.
The session concluded with a focus on the IT sector, recognizing the potential for technological partnership to enhance bilateral relations further. Both sides acknowledged the vital role of Parliamentary Friendship Groups in enhancing diplomatic contacts and broadening mutual cooperation.
