Islamabad: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif stated Pakistan’s unwavering commitment to support the Kashmiri people’s struggle for self-determination, emphasizing the country’s ongoing moral, political, and diplomatic backing.
According to Kashmir Media Service, the Prime Minister’s remarks were part of his message on the occasion of Youm-e-Istehsal, which commemorates the anniversary of India’s controversial actions in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK) on August 5, 2019. Sharif reflected on the severe implications of these actions, noting that they were part of efforts to reinforce India’s control over the territory.
Sharif criticized India’s attempts to portray Jammu and Kashmir as an integral part of its territory, countering with references to international law and historical facts that support the Kashmiri claim to self-determination. He highlighted ongoing suppressive measures in IIOJK, including silencing local leadership, muzzling the media, and maintaining a high number of political prisoners. He condemned the routine harassment, arbitrary detentions, and extensive military operations under various draconian laws.
The Prime Minister praised the resilience of the Kashmiri people in facing these adversities, asserting that India’s coercive tactics have not quelled their aspirations for self-determination. He concluded by calling on the international community to press India to address the human rights violations in IIOJK, repeal oppressive laws, and adhere to UN Security Council resolutions regarding the region, underlining that peace in South Asia hinges on the resolution of the Jammu and Kashmir dispute.
