ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif expressed strong concerns regarding India’s actions concerning the Indus Waters Treaty, describing them as a “red-line” for Pakistan. During a meeting with Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi, Sharif highlighted the heightened tensions in South Asia following the Pahalgam incident and criticized what he termed India’s provocative behavior.
Sharif dismissed any attempts to associate Pakistan with the Pahalgam incident without evidence, advocating for an international, transparent, and credible investigation to uncover the facts. The Prime Minister accused India of creating a media distraction to divert attention from the Jammu and Kashmir dispute, which he identified as a core issue of instability in the region.
The meeting, part of the Iranian foreign minister’s official visit to Islamabad, also saw the prime minister offering condolences for the recent tragic explosion in Bandar Abbas, Iran. The incident resulted in significant loss of life and injuries, prompting Sharif to express his prayers for the affected families and the recovery of the injured.
During the discussions, the Prime Minister emphasized the importance of Pakistan’s longstanding ties with Iran and expressed satisfaction with the positive developments in bilateral relations. Highlighting areas for increased cooperation, Sharif pointed to trade, energy, border management, and regional connectivity as key sectors. He reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to working with Iran for regional peace, stability, and development.
Foreign Minister Araghchi conveyed greetings from the Iranian leadership and reiterated Iran’s dedication to strengthening ties with Pakistan. He also extended an invitation from Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian for Prime Minister Sharif to visit Tehran within the year, underscoring Iran’s role in fostering peace and stability in South Asia.
