ISLAMABAD, Pakistan’s Caretaker Prime Minister Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar, during his attendance at the 16th ECO Summit in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, emphasized Pakistan’s unwavering commitment to the goals of the Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO) and called for regional cooperation in trade, investment, and sustainable economic development.
According to Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Prime Minister Kakar condemned the ongoing bombardment of Gaza by Israeli forces and urged for a resolution in line with United Nations Security Council and Organization of Islamic Cooperation resolutions. He also highlighted the growing issues of intolerance, xenophobia, and Islamophobia, advocating for legal measures against the rise of Islamophobia and promoting interfaith harmony.
In bilateral meetings on the summit sidelines with leaders from Azerbaijan and Uzbekistan, and the ECO Secretary-General, discussions centered on strengthening ties, regional connectivity, and the development of ECO.
The briefing also covered the remembrance of victims of the 1947 mass killings in Jammu, with a call for accountability and compliance with international obligations regarding the rights of the Kashmiri people. Pakistan’s support for the Kashmiri struggle for self-determination, in line with UN resolutions, was reaffirmed.
Concerns were raised about the situation in Gaza, emphasizing the need for an immediate ceasefire and humanitarian aid. The briefing highlighted the upcoming Extraordinary Islamic Summit in Riyadh, where Pakistan will advocate for an end to Israeli aggression and relief for Gaza.
Regarding the repatriation of illegally residing Afghans, the government clarified its policy, focusing on individuals destined for resettlement in third countries and working with these countries for timely settlement.
In response to the United States Commission on International Religious Freedom’s concerns about Afghan refugees and the Ahmadiyya community, Pakistan reaffirmed its commitment to international practices and its laws protecting religious minorities.
The briefing addressed concerns about alleged ceasefire violations along the Line of Control with India, emphasizing Pakistan’s commitment to the ceasefire and advising contact with the Ministry of Interior and ISPR for specific details.
Lastly, the issue of Pakistanis killed in Indian-occupied Kashmir and the repatriation of their bodies was noted, with assurance that the concerned authorities are actively addressing the matter.
