Pakistan Navy Inducts 5th ATR Aircraft to Enhance Maritime Operations

Karachi, The Pakistan Navy has officially inducted its 5th ATR aircraft during a ceremony at the Naval Aviation Base PNS Mehran in Karachi. The event, graced by Chief of the Naval Staff Admiral Naveed Ashraf as the chief guest, marks a significant step in bolstering the Navy’s operational capabilities.

According to Directorate General Information and PRs – Sindh, the newly inducted ATR aircraft, acquired from Pakistan International Airlines (PIA), is equipped with capabilities for day and night flying. It is designed to undertake a variety of missions, including ferry, logistics support, medical evacuation (MEDEVAC), general evacuation (GENEVAC), and training. The Pakistan Navy is in the process of acquiring ATR aircraft from various sources and modernizing them for maritime reconnaissance and anti-submarine warfare missions. The low operating cost of these commercial aircraft, as compared to tailor-made military aircraft, is a notable advantage.

Admiral Naveed Ashraf, speaking at the ceremony, emphasized the evolving geo-strategic environment in the Indian Ocean Region and the need for a potent naval force to counter emerging challenges. He stressed the importance of strong maritime defense for Pakistan and stated that the induction of modern aircraft like the ATR would significantly enhance the Navy’s ability to safeguard the country’s maritime frontiers.

Vice Admiral Muhammad Faisal Abbasi, Commander Pakistan Fleet, in his welcome address, pointed out that the induction of the ATR aircraft would ensure sustained operations from the western seaboard through regular logistics and personnel movements. The handover of the ATR documents to the Commander Pakistan Fleet was a key moment of the ceremony, which was attended by Flag Officers, former aviators of the Pakistan Navy, and representatives of PIA.

This induction represents a crucial enhancement of the Pakistan Navy’s operational readiness and its ability to conduct diverse maritime operations effectively.
