Pakistan Navy Enhances Fleet with Two Advanced Ships, Marking Defense Day


Karachi: In a significant boost to its maritime capabilities, the Pakistan Navy ceremoniously inducted two state-of-the-art ships, the MILGEM Class Corvette PNS BABUR and the Offshore Patrol Vessel PNS HUNAIN, at the PN Dockyard in Karachi. The event, held on September 6, was attended by President Asif Ali Zardari as the chief guest, underscoring the strategic importance of these additions to Pakistan’s naval defense.



According to Pakistan Navy, President Zardari, during the ceremony, emphasized the complex geo-strategic challenges in the Indian Ocean that necessitate a strong naval force. The induction of PNS BABUR and PNS HUNAIN coincides with Defense Day, highlighting their strategic significance. The President remarked that these ships, equipped with modern weapons, sensors, and robust machinery, are expected to significantly enhance the operational capabilities of the Navy.



The PNS BABUR was built and commissioned at the Istanbul Naval Shipyard on September 23, 2023, while the PNS HUNAIN was constructed and commissioned at the DAMEN Shipyard in Romania on July 25, 2024. These vessels are part of Pakistan Navy’s ongoing efforts to modernize and expand its fleet amid increasing maritime responsibilities.



The Chief of the Naval Staff, in his welcome address, described the ships’ induction as a major milestone in the capacity building of the Pakistan Navy. He expressed gratitude towards the government for its support and acknowledged the contributions of M/s ASFAT, Istanbul Shipyard, DAMEN Shipyard Galati Romania, and the entire project team in delivering these potent ships, which also symbolize the deep-rooted friendship and cooperation between Pakistan and the ship-building nations.



The ceremony was marked by the formal handing over of the ships’ scrolls to the Commander Pakistan Fleet, signifying their official integration into the Navy’s operational fleet. The event was also attended by HE Mr. Bilal Burdali, Deputy Minister of National Defense of Turkey, the Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee, senior representatives from the construction yards, political leaders, and high-ranking officials from the Armed Forces.
