Islamabad: A delegation from the Pakistan National Heart Association (PANAH) met with Speaker of the National Assembly, Sardar Ayaz Sadiq, to discuss the increasing prevalence of heart diseases in the country. The meeting, held at the Parliament House, was led by PANAH President Major General (Retd.) Masood-ur-Rehman Kayani.
According to a statement by National Assembly of Pakistan, Kayani briefed the Speaker on the economic and social issues contributing to heart disease, affecting a large portion of the population. He emphasized the urgent need for awareness and preventive measures to combat this growing health challenge.
Sardar Ayaz Sadiq underscored the necessity of promoting healthy lifestyle choices among citizens. He pointed out that lifestyle factors such as an unbalanced diet significantly contribute to the spread of heart disease, advocating for public awareness campaigns as a preventative strategy.
The PANAH delegation highlighted the financial burden of treating related health issues, noting that spending on diabetes treatment alone exceeds payments made to the International Monetary Fund (IMF). This revelation was presented as indicative of the critical need for immediate action.
In response, Sadiq assured the delegation of his commitment to consult with parliamentary parties to develop legislation aimed at disease prevention. He reiterated the importance of reaching a consensus to support public health and welfare through legislative measures.
The delegation included notable figures such as PANAH Secretary General Sanaullah Ghumman, Vice Presidents Dr. Qayyum and Colonel Shakil Mirza, along with other prominent members.
