Pakistan National Assembly Commits to Islamic Banking and Addresses Other Key Issues

Islamabad: The National Assembly was briefed on the government’s commitment to promoting Islamic banking and addressing other significant legislative and organizational matters. The session, filled with discussions on various notices and introductions of bills, highlighted the government’s agenda focusing on financial instruments, organizational restructuring, and national sports enhancement.

According to Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, in response to a Calling Attention Notice, Ali Pervaiz Malik, Minister of State for Finance, revealed plans to launch new Sharia-compliant certificates valued at 50 billion rupees later this month. This move is part of a broader effort to bolster Islamic banking in the country.

Additionally, Rana Tanveer Hussain, the Minister for Industries and Production, addressed another Calling Attention Notice regarding the Utility Stores Corporation. He emphasized that there are no plans to close or wind up the corporation; instead, the focus is on its restructuring. Hussain assured that the rights of the employees would be safeguarded during this process.

The session also saw the introduction of “The Supreme Court (Number of Judges) (Amendment) Bill, 2024” and “The Pakistan Environmental Protection (Amendment) Bill, 2024.” Both bills were subsequently referred to the standing committees concerned for further deliberation.

Furthermore, the House passed two significant resolutions. The first, proposed by Muhammad Moin Amir Pirzada, urges the government to provide medical, mobile, and motorcycle insurance to motorcyclists, including those who deliver food and daily use items for services like Food Panda and Bykea. This initiative suggests that all relevant expenses should be covered by the Government of Pakistan.

The second resolution, introduced by Syed Rafiullah, calls for immediate government action to enhance national sports programs. It proposes a substantial increase in funding for athletes’ development and competitions, aiming to uplift the sports sector significantly.

The National Assembly adjourned and is scheduled to reconvene tomorrow at 11 a.m. for further discussions and legislative action.
