Islamabad: The Pakistan Meteorological Department released its weekly drought update for the period of 8th to 14th September 2024, noting rainfall in various regions such as upper and central Punjab, upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and parts of northern Balochistan, with significant rains in places like Shorkot, Murree, and Takht Bahi. However, much of Balochistan, Sindh, lower Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and southern Punjab remained dry, continuing a pattern of below-normal rainfall for most of the country.
According to Pakistan Meteorological Department, while areas like Murree and Barkhan experienced above-normal rainfall, the majority of the country faced drier conditions, particularly in western and northwestern Balochistan. Temperature analysis revealed above-normal warmth across many regions, with a few exceptions like Jiwani, Nokundi, and Skardu, which recorded below-normal temperatures.
The report includes various figures detailing the spatial distribution of rainfall, temperature variations, and soil moisture, the latter based on NASA’s GRACE-FO satellite observations. Current dry conditions are particularly pronounced in northern areas, Bahawalnar in Punjab, and Nokundi in Balochistan, which are reported to have lower soil moisture content.
Looking ahead to the period of 16th to 21st September 2024, the forecast anticipates predominantly hot and dry weather for most parts of the country, with possible rain-wind/thunderstorm activity expected in Upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit Baltistan, Kashmir, and their adjoining hilly areas.
