Pakistan Marks Defence Day with Nationwide Celebrations

Islamabad: Today, Pakistan celebrates Defence Day with nationalistic zeal, commemorating the 59th anniversary of the 1965 war, where the Pakistani military defended against Indian military aggression.

According to Kashmir Media Service, Defence Day is observed each year on September 6 to honor the valiant efforts of the Pakistan Armed Forces during the 1965 conflict. The celebrations across the country started with cannon salutes and special prayers in mosques, seeking divine blessings for the nation’s prosperity and peace.

In Karachi, the day was marked by a change of guards at the mausoleum of Quaid-e-Azam Mohammad Ali Jinnah, Pakistan’s founder, while Lahore held a similar ceremony at the tomb of Allama Muhammad Iqbal, the national poet and philosopher. These ceremonies underscore the historical importance of Defence Day, reflecting the nation’s respect and reverence for its leaders and martyrs.

The highlight of the day will be the main ceremony at the General Headquarters (GHQ) in Rawalpindi, scheduled for 8 PM. Expected attendees include Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif as the chief guest, along with Army Chief General Syed Asim Munir and various high-ranking officials from civil and military sectors. The ceremony will feature laying wreaths at the Martyrs’ Memorial and addresses by the Prime Minister and the Army Chief.

President Asif Ali Zardari, in his special message, stated that Defence Day reiterates the country’s dedication to maintaining sovereignty and readiness to face any threats. He pointed out the critical need for addressing the Kashmir issue for regional peace.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif reiterated the significance of the day, recalling the thwarting of Indian military plans in 1965 and highlighting the ongoing Kashmir dispute as a pivotal factor in regional instability. He emphasized the necessity of resolving this issue as of the wishes of the Kashmiri people.

As the nation reflects on the significance of the 1965 war, military and political leaders celebrate this day as a testament to Pakistan’s enduring spirit and commitment to defending its sovereignty.
