Islamabad: Federal Minister for National Heritage and Culture Aurangzeb Khan Khichi chaired the inaugural meeting of the Task Force on the Gandhara – Cradle of Buddhism (GCOB) Strategy with the aim of advancing Pakistan’s Gandhara heritage and enhancing cultural tourism. The initiative, approved by the Prime Minister, is designed to position Pakistan as a leading destination for Buddhist heritage sites.

According to Press Information Department, the meeting included officials from various ministries and cultural bodies, who discussed a roadmap to implement the GCOB Strategy. Minister Khichi emphasized the Prime Minister’s personal interest in the project and the importance of cooperation among federal and provincial entities, particularly in Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, regions central to the Gandhara civilization.

Coordinator Imran Shaukat outlined his long-term involvement in the Gandhara Project and highlighted the interest from Buddhist communities worldwide. Provincial representatives proposed additional heritage sites and stressed the role of cultural diplomacy. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs advocated for improved facilities for international visitors, while the Ministry of Religious Affairs suggested incorporating interfaith harmony into the strategy.

Secretary Asad Rehman Gilani committed to expediting implementation of the initiatives, aligning with the directives of Minister Khichi.
