Karachi: The Pakistan Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO) has unveiled the Space4Climate Initiative, aimed at enhancing climate resilience through the use of space-based technologies. The initiative features a GeoAI-enabled Climate Observatory, a platform designed to integrate satellite data with geospatial analytics and modeling to provide actionable insights for decision-makers.
According to Inter Services Public Relations, the observatory’s capabilities include monitoring atmospheric pollutants such as aerosols and greenhouse gases like CO2 and methane, in addition to tracking changes in forests, glaciers, coastal dynamics, river systems, and land use. It also keeps an eye on climate-induced hazards such as floods, droughts, heatwaves, sea-level rise, and glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs).
The integration of space-based and in-situ data is expected to bolster evidence-based policymaking and support sustainable development efforts in Pakistan. This initiative aligns with the country’s climate agenda and global climate action objectives.
