Pakistan Launches Initiative to Revolutionize Ship Recycling Standards with International Support

Karachi: Pakistan has embarked on a significant initiative to elevate its ship recycling standards, aiming to align with international norms and bolster its position in the global market. The launch of the project, ‘Decent Work in Pakistan’s Ship Recycling Sector,’ spearheaded by the International Labour Organization (ILO) and International Maritime Organization (IMO), seeks to make the industry safer, greener, and more sustainable. The initiative, backed by the Norwegian government, was unveiled during a high-profile event in Karachi, attended by a diverse group of stakeholders including government officials, industry representatives, and UN agencies.

According to International Labour Organization, the collaboration between ILO, IMO, and the Government of Norway is pivotal in transforming Pakistan’s ship recycling practices. The project, known as SENSREC-DW, focuses on enhancing compliance with international labor, safety, and environmental standards. The timing is crucial as it follows Pakistan’s ratification of the Hong Kong Convention for safe ship recycling in December 2023. The project also sets the stage for the future ratification of two vital ILO Conventions on Occupational Safety and Health slated for 2025.

The ship recycling sector, essential for sustainable global practices, is plagued by challenges, particularly concerning worker safety and exposure to hazardous conditions. The new initiative aims to rectify these issues by improving safety measures and fostering a culture of dignity and well-being for workers. Efforts will include training at the yard level and promoting dialogue between workers and employers to develop effective strategies for environmental and social safeguards.

Geir Tonstol, the ILO Country Director for Pakistan, emphasized the importance of social dialogue in addressing the sector’s challenges, stating that the project will bolster policy responses and institutional capacities. Anja Benedicte Myrtveit, representing the Embassy of Norway, highlighted Norway’s commitment, noting an investment of 18 million NOK over the next two and a half years.

The launch event reflected a strong commitment from multiple stakeholders, indicative of a broad support base for the initiative and a positive outlook for the future of sustainable ship recycling in Pakistan.
