Islamabad: The observance of National Diabetes Day on November 14 aims to raise awareness about diabetes prevention and management as Pakistan collaborates with the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) and the World Health Organization to enhance the well-being of millions affected by the disease. The theme “Diabetes and Well-being” for 2024-26 emphasizes the need for access to diabetes care and support for those living with the condition. Despite scientific advancements, one in ten people globally suffers from diabetes, with 50% remaining undiagnosed and untreated, leading to serious complications like heart disease, kidney failure, neurological disorders, stroke, and blindness.
According to Press Information Department, Pakistan faces a significant challenge with approximately 33 million citizens affected by diabetes, placing the country among those with the largest diabetic populations. An additional 11 million adults have impaired glucose tolerance, and around 8 to 9 million individuals with diabetes remain undiagnosed. The primary risk factors contributing to diabetes in Pakistan include environmental and geographical factors, genetic predispositions, dietary habits, and inactive lifestyles.
The Government of Pakistan is committed to controlling the escalation of diabetes and ensuring the well-being of the diabetic population. Significant health reforms have been introduced to address non-communicable diseases, with diabetes being a key focus. In collaboration with partners, the government has developed various programs to prevent and control diabetes. At the federal level, the “Prime Minister’s Program for Prevention and Control of Diabetes Mellitus” will be launched under the Ministry of National Health Services, Regulations & Coordination. This program aims to control the disease in federal areas and enhance capacities in all provinces to provide universal health coverage, diagnosis, and treatment for diabetic patients, along with promoting awareness and behavioral change.
The government reiterates its commitment to providing health facilities to all citizens, emphasizing that a prosperous future relies on mitigating the disease burden and reducing out-of-pocket expenditures. The collective effort to eliminate diseases like diabetes is essential for a healthier Pakistan.
