Pakistan Launches Energy-Saving Initiatives, Seeks U.S. Support for Power Sector Reforms

Islamabad, In a significant policy shift, Pakistan is initiating a comprehensive fan replacement program aimed at energy conservation and addressing the seasonal variation in energy demand, as outlined by the Minister for Power Sardar Awais Leghari.

According to Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, during discussions with a delegation from the U.S. Department of Treasury, Minister Leghari detailed the reforms planned for enhancing the efficiency and sustainability of Pakistan’s power sector. He emphasized the objective of these reforms to not only improve the country’s energy mix but also to rectify prevailing sector deficiencies.

The minister also expressed the necessity of increased private sector involvement in the distribution and transmission of electricity to improve service quality across Pakistan. Highlighting the need for international support, Leghari called for U.S. technical assistance to bridge the gap between seasonal energy generation and demand and emphasized the importance of American aid in securing more favorable international financing terms for these initiatives.

The U.S. Assistant Secretary of the Treasury commended Pakistan’s efforts towards reforming its power sector and pledged continued cooperation to help resolve the challenges faced by the country in this critical area.
