Pakistan Launches Cybersecurity Hackathon to Bolster IT Resilience


Karachi: The Digital Pakistan Cybersecurity Hackathon 2024 officially launched in Karachi, gathering participants, industry experts, and key stakeholders committed to fortifying Pakistan’s cybersecurity resilience. Organized by Ignite under the auspices of the Ministry of IT and Telecom, this flagship event marks the beginning of a nationwide series that will see 521 teams from across Pakistan competing in cybersecurity challenges designed to identify, nurture, and promote local talent in this critical field.



According to Press Information Department, the Honourable Minister of State for IT and Telecom, Ms. Shaza Fatima Khawaja, addressed the launching ceremony as Chief Guest, stating that the current government aims to make Pakistan a hub of information technology with special attention to cybersecurity. She expressed gratitude to all participants, partner organizations, and organizers who contributed to the success of the Karachi launch. Ms. Khawaja noted that Pakistan has been recognized in the Top Tier-1 of the ITU-Global Cybersecurity Index 2024, reflecting the nation’s efforts in strengthening cybersecurity resilience.



Mr. Zarrar Hasham Khan, Secretary IT and Telecom, emphasized the Ministry’s commitment to developing national cybersecurity expertise and capabilities. He highlighted that initiatives like the Cybersecurity Hackathon are crucial for fostering a secure digital environment and providing vital skills and opportunities for young cybersecurity professionals.



CEO of Ignite, Mr. Adeel Aijaz Shaikh, underlined the organization’s role in establishing the Hackathon as a national brand for cybersecurity talent identification and workforce readiness. Mr. Shaikh shared that over 3,000 individuals completed hands-on cybersecurity training through awareness sessions and workshops conducted in 16 cities. He also mentioned the participation of Pakistan’s cybersecurity talent on international stages, such as Blackhat in Saudi Arabia, aligning with the vision to showcase Pakistani talent globally.



As the Digital Pakistan Cybersecurity Hackathon series commences with its launch in Karachi, it sets a strong precedent for future events. The initiative aims to provide essential insights and skills to participants, preparing them to meet evolving cyber threats. The Ministry of IT and Telecom, together with Ignite, remains committed to nurturing a resilient digital ecosystem through initiatives like the Hackathon, ensuring Pakistan’s place in the global cybersecurity landscape.
