Pakistan Launches Awareness Campaign Against Gender-Based Violence and Human Rights Advocacy

Islamabad, Mushal Hussein Mullik, the Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Human Rights and Women Empowerment, highlighted the critical role of Women Protection and Rehabilitation Centers in providing comprehensive support to victims of violence. She spoke at the launch of the 16-day “Activism Against Gender-Based Violence” campaign, which includes a significant Transit Advertising Campaign, in collaboration with the Ministry of Railways and UN Women.

According to Press Information Department, the Transit Advertising Campaign, starting November 25, aims to spread crucial information on various human rights themes, including Zainab Alert, and the rights of transgender persons, senior citizens, and persons with disabilities. Mushal emphasized the Ministry of Human Rights’ efforts in reviewing laws and policies related to women’s protection. She mentioned significant legislation like the Zainab Alert Response and Recovery Act, 2020; Enforcement of Women’s Property Rights Act 2020; The Anti Rape (Investigation and Trial) Act 2021; and The Protection against Harassment of Women at Workplace (Amendment) Act, 2022.

Mushal also highlighted the enactment of the Legal Aid and Justice Authority Act, 2020, which aims to provide legal and financial assistance to vulnerable groups, including women, in criminal cases. The establishment of Human Rights Relief and Revolving Funds was another significant step mentioned, designed to provide financial assistance to victims of human rights violations. Furthermore, the Ministry of Human Rights has initiated a National Policy on Ending Violence against Women, emphasizing the importance of data collection on women’s status and building partnerships to facilitate access to legal and justice systems.

As a strong advocate of gender equality, Mushal has initiated a 100-day Action Plan to support human rights and women empowerment in Pakistan. She is also focused on highlighting human rights violations in Indian Occupied Kashmir and Palestine at national and international forums. The Transit Advertising Campaign is expected to be a powerful tool for disseminating information, connecting with diverse audiences, and catalyzing social and behavioral change.
