Pakistan Hosts First-Ever International Training on Advanced Treaty Practice

Islamabad: The International Mediation and Arbitration Centre (IMAC) and the Ministry of Law and Justice have launched a four-day international training programme titled “Advanced Treaty Practice: From Signature to Domestic Law” at COMSTECH, Islamabad. This event marks a significant milestone as it is the first international capacity-building initiative in Pakistan dedicated exclusively to advanced treaty practice and the domestic implementation of international legal obligations.

According to Press Information Department, the training has attracted delegates, legal practitioners, government officials, academics, and policy experts from China, Bangladesh, Azerbaijan, Türkiye, and Pakistan. This collaboration highlights a growing spirit of international legal cooperation and regional engagement in treaty law and dispute resolution.

Ms. Aisha Rasool, Project Director of IMAC, emphasized the programme’s importance as a testament to Pakistan’s expanding role in international legal cooperation. She noted that the training stems from a Memorandum of Cooperation between Pakistan and Azerbaijan and is the first initiative under that framework. The programme addresses the comprehensive lifecycle of treaties, including negotiation, drafting, ratification, and domestic legal implementation.

Raja Naeem Akbar, Secretary of the Ministry of Law and Justice, praised the initiative, underscoring its strategic importance in translating treaty commitments into enforceable domestic laws. Former Federal Minister for Law and Justice, Ahmer Bilal Soofi, also highlighted the increasing influence of treaties on future alliances and the need for practitioners to understand their implications.

The training features a panel of experts, including former ministers, ambassadors, and legal scholars, providing participants with practical exposure to complex treaty processes. The programme also includes visits to significant Pakistani institutions, offering insights into the country’s constitutional and cultural frameworks.

This initiative underscores Pakistan’s commitment to international legal cooperation and regional partnerships through education, treaty practice, mediation, and diplomacy. The multinational participation enriches professional learning and fosters mutual trust and legal diplomacy among participating nations.
