Islamabad: Federal Minister for Power, Sardar Awais Ahmad Khan Leghari, addressed the CASA-1000 Intergovernmental Council meeting virtually on Thursday, emphasizing the importance of the CASA-1000 project and Pakistan’s involvement in the initiative. The meeting, hosted in Dushanbe, Tajikistan, included energy ministers and representatives from Afghanistan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, and Pakistan, alongside international organization officials and technical experts.
Minister Leghari articulated that CASA-1000 is beyond an energy transmission endeavor; it aims to drive economic development and enhance regional cooperation. He underscored that the project’s timely completion is a high priority for Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif, highlighting its significance in fortifying regional connections.
Leghari confirmed Pakistan’s preparedness to deliver surplus electricity to partner countries within the CASA network during winter months. He proposed utilizing a reverse energy flow for bilateral trade, suggesting that Pakistan’s surplus could meet the energy demands of Central Asian nations. He stressed the importance of operating the network effectively and transparently, ensuring all partner countries benefit equally. Despite project delays, he assured that Pakistan has taken steps to secure and sustain the project’s assets.
Concluding his remarks, Leghari reiterated that CASA-1000 is not solely an energy project but a cornerstone for regional prosperity and collaboration. Its successful implementation, he noted, would reflect the shared commitment to a brighter future for the region.
