Karachi: Pakistan has lauded the recent ceasefire agreement between the Houthis and the United States as a significant diplomatic achievement, expressing support for a peaceful resolution to the Yemeni crisis through dialogue.
Addressing the United Nations Security Council, Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, Pakistan’s Permanent Representative, called the ceasefire a diplomatic breakthrough and urged the involved parties to utilize this opportunity to advance a comprehensive intra-Yemeni dialogue.
Ambassador Ahmad emphasized Pakistan’s commitment to a peaceful political resolution of the Yemeni conflict, stressing the importance of a Yemeni-led political process supported by the United Nations. He conveyed Pakistan’s full backing for such an initiative.
During the Security Council briefing, comprehensive insights on the Yemeni situation were provided by Special Envoy Hans Grundberg, Under-Secretary-General Tom Fletcher, and Ms. Dina El Mamoun.
Ambassador Ahmad praised the diplomatic efforts of Saudi Arabia and Oman and urged all parties to adhere to the December 2023 Roadmap. He called for restraint and a focus on diplomacy to resolve the ongoing crisis.
Linking the situation in Yemen to broader regional instability, Ambassador Ahmad highlighted ongoing Israeli aggression in Gaza and recent tensions in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden, urging the Security Council to take note.
The Ambassador reaffirmed Pakistan’s solidarity with the people of Yemen, urging the international community and the UN to remain engaged in preventing further deterioration and working towards a peaceful future for Yemen.
