Islamabad: Pakistan is prepared to engage with the newly inaugurated U.S. administration to foster longstanding relations between the two nations, the country’s Foreign Office announced on Thursday.
According to a statement by Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Foreign Office Spokesperson Shafqat Ali Khan addressed the media during his weekly briefing in Islamabad. He reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to maintaining a strong relationship with the United States, emphasizing the importance of non-interference in each other’s internal affairs.
The spokesperson welcomed President Donald Trump’s assumption of office, underscoring the significance of U.S.-Pakistan relations across multiple areas. He expressed optimism about continuing the positive trajectory of bilateral ties.
In response to a query, Khan mentioned an existing arrangement with the U.S. under which a significant number of Afghan refugees residing in Pakistan are slated for resettlement in the United States by September. He confirmed that this arrangement remains in effect.
Addressing concerns about the presence of Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) sanctuaries in Afghanistan, Khan stated that Pakistan is urging Afghan authorities to address these issues to realize the full potential of bilateral relations.
On the Kashmir issue, Khan reiterated Pakistan’s clear position, highlighting global awareness of the situation in Indian-administered Jammu and Kashmir. He affirmed Pakistan’s support for any efforts aimed at resolving the dispute.
When questioned about the Indus Water Treaty, the spokesperson assured that Pakistan is committed to its full implementation, including its dispute resolution mechanisms. He expressed hope that India would also honor the treaty in good faith and in its entirety.
