Pakistan Experiences Mixed Rainfall Patterns; Drought Concerns Ease in Some Regions

Islamabad: Recent weather updates from the Pakistan Meteorological Department highlight varied rainfall and temperature patterns across the country, with some areas receiving well above normal rainfall while others remain dry.

According to Pakistan Meteorological Department, during the last week, areas like Kashmir and adjoining regions of Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) recorded maximum rainfall. In contrast, western Balochistan and interior Sindh experienced little to no rainfall. The department’s figures indicate that Punjab, Kashmir, northwest Balochistan, and most of KP received rainfall significantly above the normal levels for this time of year, based on records from 1991 to 2020.

Temperature analyses show mean temperatures were above normal across most of the country, except in Lahore, Jhelum, DI Khan, and Paddidan, where temperatures were slightly below normal. The forecast from July 9th to 15th predicts continued rainfall across most of Pakistan, which is expected to alleviate the flash drought conditions in the southern and southwestern parts of the country.

The Meteorological Department’s report, incorporating NASA’s GRACE-FO satellite data, also provides insights into soil moisture conditions. It indicates drier conditions in the northern and central parts, while central and southern areas have better moisture levels.
