Pakistan Expands Digital Access Through New Connectivity Projects

Islamabad: The Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication, in collaboration with the Universal Service Fund (USF), has made significant strides in expanding digital access across Pakistan by launching 161 projects that have connected 37.1 million people and installed over 4,400 telecom sites. These efforts have included the deployment of 17,200 kilometers of fiber optic cable, reaching underserved communities nationwide.

Federal Minister for IT and Telecommunication Ms. Shaza Fatima, addressing the initiative, highlighted the transformative impact of technology, especially for women. The projects signify progress in empowering women in technology, moving beyond aspirations to tangible actions. Ms. Fatima noted that the Ministry has worked to build an ecosystem that supports and scales the ambitions of women in tech through various initiatives, including broadband expansion and digital skills training.

The National Broadband Initiatives, spearheaded by USF, have brought broadband services to over 21,600 rural areas, enabling access to the digital world for many who had previously been unconnected. These projects have introduced more than 1,000 towns and Union Councils to the national digital network, allowing women and girls to go online for education and employment opportunities.

The federal government has allocated Rs. 23 billion to the USF for continued expansion of connectivity. Ms. Fatima emphasized the importance of inclusivity in these endeavors and called for collective efforts from mentors, investors, and allies to sustain the momentum.

Upcoming initiatives by USF aim to further enhance connectivity in districts such as Sialkot, Badin, Abbottabad, and Sanghar, reinforcing the commitment to a digitally inclusive Pakistan. The event was attended by prominent figures, including MNA Ms. Sharmila Faruqui, senior officials, and representatives from the telecom and IT sectors, highlighting the collaborative effort to drive digital access forward.
