Islamabad, November 23, 2021 (PPI-OT):In a dignified ceremony, the Islamic Republic of Pakistan represented by Ambassador Munir Akram, the Permanent Representative of Pakistan to the United Nations, and the Republic of Palau, represented by Ambassador Ilana Seid, the Permanent Representative of Palau to the United Nations signed a Joint Communiqué today to formally establish diplomatic relations between the two countries, says a press release received here today from New York.
Welcoming the landmark achievement, the two Permanent Representatives expressed their confidence that the establishment of the diplomatic relations will open new vistas of cooperation between the two countries in various fields, including political, trade and economic, cultural and educational relations, and other areas of mutual interest.
They also noted with satisfaction the existing warm and cordial ties between the two countries at the United Nations and on other multilateral forums and resolved to further solidify these ties by diversifying the existing areas of cooperation. The Republic of Palau, consisting of some 340 coral and volcanic islands, is perched on the Kyushu-Palau Ridge in the western Pacific Ocean. It was a member of the UN Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands, which was established in 1947. The Republic of Palau officially became a sovereign state on October 1, 1994.
Both Pakistan and Palau are members of the Asia Pacific Group. The establishment of diplomatic relations will help them to work jointly in achieving the SDGs, and UN’s critical agenda to promote global development and prosperity. They also jointly informed His Excellency António Guterres, Secretary-General of the United Nations, about the establishment of Pakistan-Palau diplomatic relations today.
