Islamabad, In response to international commentary on the General Elections held on 8 February 2024, Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed surprise at the negative reactions, emphasizing the nation’s commitment to democratic values amid challenging circumstances.
According to Ministry of Foreign Affairs, certain international entities and countries issued statements that, in Pakistan’s view, failed to appreciate the complexity of conducting elections amidst significant security threats, including those posed by foreign-sponsored terrorism. The ministry clarified misconceptions, particularly addressing the claim of a nationwide internet shutdown, stating that only mobile services were temporarily suspended on election day to mitigate the risk of terrorist activities.
Highlighting the free and enthusiastic participation of millions of Pakistani voters, the ministry criticized the premature negative commentary, suggesting that such assessments overlooked the successful and peaceful execution of the electoral process.
Pakistan’s Foreign Affairs Ministry underscored the nation’s dedication to fostering a stable and democratic society, reiterating that the conduct of the general elections was a testament to Pakistan’s resilience and commitment to its democratic journey. The statement concluded with a reaffirmation of Pakistan’s resolve to continue enhancing its democratic polity, driven by the aspirations of its people and the vision of its founding fathers, rather than external pressures or critiques.
