New York: Pakistan has criticized India’s unilateral suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty at the United Nations, citing concerns over the impact on regional stability and ecological balance.
In a statement to the UN Security Council, Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the UN, expressed concerns about India’s actions, stating that the disruption could affect millions and increase climate vulnerability.
The treaty, which has been considered a model of resilience despite historical conflicts, is now in jeopardy, according to Pakistan. Ambassador Ahmad emphasized that this move by India could undermine global confidence in international agreements.
The Ambassador also referenced the Court of Arbitration’s 2025 award, which supports the treaty’s validity and its mechanisms for resolving disputes. He called for a swift return to compliance and the resumption of normal operations through established channels.
