Pakistan Criticizes India’s Clampdown on Kashmiri Political Parties

Islamabad, The Pakistani government has expressed strong disapproval of India’s recent actions against several political organizations in Jammu and Kashmir, labeling them as unwarranted suppressions of political freedom in the disputed region.

According to Kashmir Media Service, the Indian government’s declaration of the Jammu and Kashmir Peoples Freedom League and four factions of the Jammu and Kashmir Peoples League as “unlawful associations” has been met with condemnation from Islamabad. Additionally, the extension of the ban on the Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front for another five years has escalated concerns over the curtailing of political expression and association in the region.

These developments bring the total number of proscribed Kashmiri political parties to fourteen, an action that Pakistan asserts not only undermines the democratic aspirations of the Kashmiri people but also violates international human rights standards and humanitarian law. The call for the death penalty against Yasin Malik, a prominent Kashmiri leader sentenced to life imprisonment in 2022, epitomizes what Islamabad views as India’s oppressive regime in Kashmir aimed at quelling the local population’s quest for self-determination—a right upheld by numerous United Nations Security Council Resolutions.

Pakistan’s demands are clear: it urges India to revoke the restrictions on the banned parties, release all detained political figures, including Yasin Malik, and adhere to the UN resolutions that advocate for the Kashmiri people’s right to decide their future.
