NEW YORK: Pakistan has called upon the United Nations Security Council to clearly reject and condemn recent attacks against Iran that have occurred since the 13th of this month. These attacks, according to Pakistan, contravene international law and the UN Charter.
In a statement delivered at the UN Security Council meeting in New York, Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmed, Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, expressed solidarity with the Iranian government and its people during this challenging period.
The Ambassador urged the Security Council to denounce the attacks on nuclear facilities safeguarded by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). Such attacks, he noted, violate both Security Council and IAEA resolutions, as well as international humanitarian law.
Emphasizing the Security Council’s responsibility for maintaining international peace and security, Ambassador Ahmed called for urgent and decisive action. He warned that these attacks set a dangerous precedent and pose a threat to regional and global security.
The Ambassador also advocated for urgent dialogue and diplomacy, in line with the UN Charter, to achieve a peaceful resolution to the Iranian nuclear issue. To this end, Pakistan, alongside China and Russia, has proposed a resolution calling for an immediate and unconditional ceasefire in the region.
The proposed resolution urges all parties to avoid further escalation and emphasizes the protection of civilians and infrastructure. It supports a diplomatic solution to the Iranian nuclear issue that is acceptable to all involved.
During the session, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres also called for immediate international action to halt the conflict and resume negotiations regarding Iran’s nuclear program.
