Islamabad, Pakistan has emphasized the necessity to bolster the United Nations’ abilities to address both long-standing and emerging threats to global peace and security. The nation particularly pointed to the unresolved issues in Palestine and Kashmir, suggesting a need for the world body to be more effective in these areas.
According to a news release by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, on the occasion of the UN’s 79th anniversary, Pakistan’s ambassador to the organization, Munir Akram, remarked on the successes of the UN since its inception in 1945. However, he also drew attention to its shortcomings, notably its inability to uphold the right to self-determination and liberation from foreign occupation for the inhabitants of Palestine and Kashmir.
Ambassador Akram referenced the continued plight of the Palestinians in Gaza due to Israeli bombardments and the extensive human rights breaches experienced by the residents of what he termed the “Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir.” He described these situations as glaring indicators of the areas where the United Nations has been unsuccessful.
Furthermore, Munir Akram underscored the importance of enhancing the UN’s proficiency in counteracting escalating tensions between major powers and the emerging nuclear and conventional arms race. He also advocated for initiatives to rekindle equitable and inclusive global economic growth and to combat the looming threat presented by climate change.
