Pakistan Calls for Rights-Based Global Counter-Terrorism Framework

New York: Pakistan has advocated for a balanced global counter-terrorism framework that emphasizes human rights and the need for addressing prolonged conflicts.

Speaking at the United Nations headquarters during Ambassadorial-level consultations on the future of the UN’s counter-terrorism architecture, Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, highlighted the importance of a counter-terrorism approach that does not infringe on rights and international law.

Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad stressed the necessity for a United Nations counter-terrorism strategy that effectively tackles ongoing conflicts and addresses the root causes of terrorism. He pointed out that current frameworks must avoid justifying injustice and violations of international law under the guise of counter-terrorism efforts.

Furthermore, Ambassador Iftikhar underscored the importance of distinguishing between acts of terrorism and legitimate struggles for self-determination and against foreign occupation.

The consultations focused on how the UN should evolve its approach to counter-terrorism by the year 2080, with Pakistan advocating for a framework that supports peace and respects human rights.
