Pakistan Appeals to UN for Action Against Cross-Border Terrorism from Afghanistan

Islamabad, Pakistan has officially called on the United Nations to investigate the financing and military support behind the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), which has been conducting cross-border terrorist attacks. In a statement made during a United Nations Security Council debate on the situation in Afghanistan, Munir Akram, Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the UN, emphasized the need for the UN to urge the Afghan interim government to prevent such attacks and the infiltration of terrorist groups like the TTP into Pakistani territory.

According to Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Akram expressed concern that if left unchecked, the TTP, with support from Al-Qaeda and certain state sponsors, could evolve into a significant global terrorist threat. He stressed that counterterrorism should be a top priority in any future engagement strategy with the Afghan interim government. Furthermore, Akram appealed to the United Nations Security Council to back Islamabad’s call for the Taliban authorities to distance themselves from the TTP, which has been targeting military and civilian sites in Pakistan.

Akram also highlighted the need for the international community to provide unconditional humanitarian assistance to the millions of Afghans in need. He urged the interim Taliban government to adhere to its international obligations, particularly regarding the fundamental rights of women and girls, underscoring the importance of global cooperation in addressing both terrorism and humanitarian issues in Afghanistan.
