Pakistan and Russia Explore Strengthening Ties in Energy and Trade


Moscow: Pakistan and Russia have taken significant steps towards enhancing their bilateral relations, with a particular focus on energy cooperation, during a recent visit by Syed Tariq Fatemi, Special Assistant to the Prime Minister of Pakistan. Fatemi’s discussions with key Russian officials emphasized the potential for collaboration in various sectors, including trade, connectivity, and cybersecurity.



During his three-day visit, Fatemi met with Russian Minister of Energy Sergey Tsivilev, co-chair of the Pakistan-Russia Inter-Governmental Commission. The talks were part of an effort to build on the outcomes of the previous commission meeting in Moscow and prepare for the upcoming session in Pakistan. Both sides explored the prospects of creating new steel mills and enhancing Pakistan’s role as a transit hub.



Fatemi also briefed Tsivilev on recent events in South Asia, highlighting Russia’s efforts in mitigating regional tensions. The discussions extended to a meeting with Yury Ushakov, Senior Aide to the Russian President on Foreign Policy Issues, where Fatemi outlined Pakistan’s stance on India’s actions concerning the Indus Waters Treaty.



In addition to official meetings, Fatemi engaged with Russian media, providing insights into the evolving Pakistan-Russia relationship and regional dynamics. He addressed the Valdai Discussion Club, a prominent think tank, further showcasing Pakistan’s perspective on South Asian developments.



The visit was marked by constructive exchanges with Russian parliamentarians, academics, and journalists, furthering Pakistan’s diplomatic outreach. Earlier, Fatemi also met with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, underscoring the broad scope of cooperation envisioned between the two nations.



The visit has been widely recognized for its role in advancing Pakistan’s relations with Russia, particularly in areas crucial for economic growth such as trade, investment, and energy connectivity.
