Pakistan and Russia Aim to Boost Trade and Economic Ties, Focus on Regional Connectivity


Islamabad: Pakistan and Russia have expressed a renewed commitment to deepen their trade and economic relationships and enhance regional connectivity. This commitment was highlighted during a meeting in Islamabad on Thursday, where various opportunities for cooperation in sectors like agriculture, food security, business, education, and more were discussed. The meeting saw the participation of key figures including Pakistan’s President Asif Ali Zardari and Russia’s Deputy Prime Minister Mr. Alexei Overchuk.



According to Press Information Department, the discussions between President Asif Ali Zardari and Deputy Prime Minister Alexei Overchuk focused on numerous cooperative aspects. President Zardari emphasized the potential for barter trade and improving connectivity through better visa policies and direct transportation links, which could bolster economic and people-to-people ties.



The dialogue underscored the vast potential for joint ventures in agriculture, aiming to benefit both nations. An upcoming business delegation from Pakistan to Russia in October is expected to further explore these opportunities. Mr. Overchuk noted that Russia anticipates enhancing cooperation in areas critical to both countries, including food security and education, and mentioned the upcoming visit of the Russian Prime Minister to Pakistan as a significant forthcoming event to strengthen these ties.



The meeting was also attended by prominent Pakistani officials such as Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mr. Ishaq Dar, Chairman Pakistan People’s Party Mr. Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, and other ministers and senior government officials. The discussions highlighted a mutual respect for cultural and religious values, with Mr. Overchuk condemning any acts of desecration against the Holy Quran, underscoring Russia’s respect for Muslim culture.
