Islamabad, Today signifies the 75th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Pakistan and Norway, a relationship characterized by mutual respect, shared values, and multifaceted cooperation.
According to Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Pakistan and Norway have nurtured their partnership over the past 75 years across political, economic, academic, environmental, social, and cultural domains. Both nations are committed to promoting regional and global peace, security, and sustainable development. High-level exchanges and leadership meetings, along with active collaboration in various multilateral fora, have been hallmarks of Pakistan-Norway relations.
The bilateral economic relations are robust, with significant trade in multiple product lines and substantial investments from major Norwegian companies in Pakistan, including Telenor Group, Scatec ASA, and Jotun Paints. Recent cooperation in IT and ITES, ship-breaking, and ship-recycling sectors has shown considerable potential.
Pakistan acknowledges Norway’s consistent development assistance in areas such as sustainable development, climate action, renewable energy, and humanitarian aid during natural disasters. Notably, Norway contributed 227 million NOK in humanitarian assistance following last year’s floods in Pakistan. The NORPART programme, facilitated by Norway’s development agency Norad, has been instrumental in advancing bilateral academic cooperation, enhancing student mobility, and curriculum development.
The Pakistani-origin Norwegians form a crucial link between the two countries. Arriving in Norway in the early 1970s, this diaspora is now one of the largest immigrant groups in Norway, contributing significantly to politics, liberal arts, business, education, science, research, medicine, healthcare, law, consultancy, and engineering. Pakistan takes pride in their socio-economic contributions in Norway.
As Pakistan and Norway celebrate this milestone, Pakistan looks forward to a continued and flourishing friendship and cooperation with Norway in the years ahead.
