Pakistan and Malaysia Forge Stronger Ties Amid Regional Challenges

Kuala Lumpur: The recent official visit of Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif of Pakistan to Malaysia concluded with both nations reaffirming their commitment to strengthening bilateral relations. During the visit from October 5-7, invited by Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, the leaders discussed various areas of cooperation, including trade, defense, and regional security.

Prime Minister Sharif’s visit to Malaysia, his first since taking office in March 2024, highlighted the longstanding partnership between the two countries, established in 1957 and elevated to a Strategic Partnership in 2019. The leaders held a bilateral meeting on October 6, where they emphasized the importance of regular high-level exchanges to guide bilateral cooperation.

In the economic sphere, the leaders expressed satisfaction with ongoing efforts to enhance trade and investment. Malaysia signaled its intention to increase palm oil exports to Pakistan, in response to rising demand. Both countries committed to promoting sustainable economic ties through the Malaysia-Pakistan Closer Economic Partnership Agreement.

The discussions also covered the growth of the halal sector, with both leaders agreeing to strengthen cooperation in halal certification and food supply. Additionally, they explored collaboration in sustainable agriculture, defense, education, aviation, healthcare, and tourism.

On regional and international issues, the leaders condemned the ongoing genocide in Gaza and expressed support for a sovereign Palestinian state. They also called for peaceful resolutions to conflicts in the Middle East and Myanmar. The leaders reaffirmed their commitment to combating Islamophobia and promoting mutual respect among religions and cultures.

Prime Minister Sharif expressed gratitude for Malaysia’s hospitality during the visit, underscoring the enduring bonds of friendship between the two nations.
