ISLAMABAD: Acting President Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani met with H.E. Dr Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, Speaker of the Islamic Consultative Assembly of Iran, at Aiwan-e-Sadr, emphasizing the importance of strengthening bilateral relations through parliamentary engagement. The meeting, attended by members of both countries’ delegations, was followed by a luncheon in honor of the Iranian guests.
Mr. Gilani highlighted the historical and cultural bonds between Pakistan and Iran, noting that these ties continue to define their friendship and cooperation. He underscored the role of parliamentary dialogue in advancing mutual understanding and promoting cooperation for the benefit of the people of both nations.
The Acting President called for enhanced political dialogue, economic connectivity, and people-to-people exchanges. He pointed to the significance of regular interactions between parliamentary committees and friendship groups in fostering cooperation on critical issues such as border management and counter-narcotics efforts.
Mr. Gilani expressed Pakistan’s desire to significantly boost bilateral trade with Iran, following agreements made during a meeting between President Asif Ali Zardari and Iranian President Dr Masoud Pezeshkian in August 2025. He also advocated for increased collaboration in education, culture, and youth linkages through academic and medical exchange programs.
A wide range of topics, including bilateral trade, regional issues, and international developments, were discussed during the meeting. Both sides reiterated their commitment to deepening cooperation across various fields and maintaining close consultations on matters of shared interest.
Dr. Ghalibaf expressed gratitude for the warm reception and reiterated Iran’s view of Pakistan as a brotherly and trusted neighbor. He noted Iran’s eagerness to expand parliamentary and economic ties and mentioned that an Iranian parliamentary delegation would attend the upcoming Inter-Parliamentary Speakers’ Conference in Pakistan.
The Iranian delegation included several high-ranking officials, while the Pakistani side was represented by prominent ministers and senators, highlighting the importance both countries place on these discussions in fostering bilateral ties.
