Pakistan and Iran Agree to Broaden Bilateral Cooperation, Target $10 Billion in Trade


Islamabad, Pakistan and Iran have reaffirmed their commitment to expanding cooperation in various areas of common interest, with a shared goal of boosting bilateral trade to $10 billion. The need for increased collaboration was discussed during a meeting between Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari and visiting Iranian President Dr. Seyyed Ebrahim Raisi at Aiwan-e-Sadr.



According to Press Information Department, both sides highlighted the importance of operationalizing trade mechanisms to reach their ambitious trade target and discussed ways to overcome regional challenges. The two leaders also exchanged views on key regional and global developments, focusing particularly on the situation in the Middle East.



President Zardari expressed deep concern over the worsening humanitarian crisis in Gaza and strongly condemned Israel’s military aggression, which has led to thousands of civilian deaths. He assured that Pakistan would consistently support the Palestinian cause and called for enhanced international efforts to end Israeli aggression and provide humanitarian relief to Gaza.



President Zardari emphasized the close fraternal ties between Pakistan and Iran, based on shared religion, culture, and history. He thanked President Raisi for being the first head of state to visit Pakistan after the general elections, indicating a strong personal commitment to strengthening Pakistan-Iran relations.



President Raisi emphasized the need to further expand and consolidate bilateral relations in all areas of mutual interest, stating that the shared interests of the two countries required increased economic, trade, and cultural relations. He noted that both countries had significant potential to increase trade to $10 billion.



The Iranian President also acknowledged Pakistan’s consistent support for the Palestinian people during the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza. Additionally, President Raisi appreciated Pakistan’s stance and its support for the people of Indian-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK) and their right to self-determination.



Both leaders reiterated their commitment to broadening cooperation, reinforcing economic ties, and addressing regional issues through enhanced collaboration. The meeting underscored the importance of building on the strong foundation of Pakistan-Iran relations to benefit both nations and promote stability in the region.
