Islamabad: In a continuing effort to adhere to the Consular Access Agreement of 2008, Pakistan and India today exchanged lists of prisoners held in each other’s jails. The exchange, conducted through diplomatic channels in Islamabad and New Delhi, occurs biannually on January 1 and July 1, aiming to facilitate consular access and ensure transparency in the handling of detainees from both nations.
According to Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Pakistan handed over a list comprising 254 Indian or presumed Indian civilian prisoners and fishermen, while India provided a list of 452 Pakistani or presumed Pakistani civilian prisoners and fishermen. Additionally, Pakistan submitted a list of 38 missing defense personnel, believed to be held by India since the conflicts in 1965 and 1971.
The Government of Pakistan has reiterated calls for the immediate release and repatriation of all Pakistani prisoners who have completed their sentences in India. It has also requested special consular access for prisoners who are physically or mentally challenged to expedite the confirmation of their nationality. Furthermore, Pakistan has urged India to ensure the safety, security, and well-being of all Pakistani or presumed Pakistani prisoners pending their release and repatriation.
This exchange highlights the ongoing humanitarian commitment of both nations to resolve issues related to prisoners. The Government of Pakistan also noted its successful repatriation efforts, which have seen the return of 62 Pakistani prisoners in 2023 and four in the current year.
