Pakistan and India Exchange Expulsions Amid Spying Accusations

Islamabad: In an escalating diplomatic conflict, Pakistan and India have expelled officials from each other’s high commissions amid accusations of espionage, further intensifying the strained relationship between the two neighboring countries.

The diplomatic row commenced when India declared a Pakistani official at its High Commission in New Delhi persona non grata. The Indian Ministry of External Affairs accused the official of engaging in activities “not in keeping with his official status” and demanded his departure within 24 hours.

In a swift retaliatory action, Pakistan expelled an Indian High Commission official, Shankar Reddy Chintala. The Pakistani Foreign Office accused him of espionage, a charge that led to his declaration as persona non grata, and instructed him and his family to exit the country within a day.

Pakistan’s Foreign Office summoned the Indian chargé d’affaires, delivering a demarche that communicated Pakistan’s protest against what it termed “undesirable activities.” The office emphasized the necessity for the Indian mission to adhere to diplomatic norms and avoid conduct that contradicts their diplomatic status.

These expulsions come amid heightened tensions following recent military clashes and mutual accusations of ceasefire violations and cross-border strikes, reflecting a significant downturn in bilateral relations.
