Islamabad: Federal Minister for Religious Affairs and Interfaith Harmony, Chaudhry Salik Hussain, held a meeting with the European Union’s Special Envoy for Promotion of Religion and Belief, H.E. Frans van Daele, and his accompanying delegation, to discuss the global rise in religious intolerance and strategies for enhancing interfaith harmony. The officials committed to collaborative efforts aimed at reducing intolerance and fostering a peaceful and cohesive future.
According to Press Information Department, the dialogue between Chaudhry Salik Hussain and H.E. Frans van Daele was centered on concerns over the escalating trend of religious intolerance, terrorism, and sectarianism worldwide. The meeting underscored the importance of establishing peace and bolstering interfaith cooperation. The Federal Minister expressed a warm welcome to the EU Special Envoy at the Ministry of Religious Affairs and Interfaith Harmony, emphasizing Pakistan’s dedication to the rights of minorities and the promotion of religious tolerance.
During the meeting, it was revealed that an inter-faith harmony policy has been formulated by Pakistan and is currently awaiting cabinet approval. Over 700 scholars from various religions and sects have endorsed the Pegham-e-Pakistan Document, a testament to the country’s commitment to fostering religious tolerance. The policy strictly prohibits any individual from exploiting religion to justify illegal acts.
Both parties reiterated their commitment to intensify cooperation between Pakistan and the European Union in combating religious extremism and promoting interfaith dialogue. The delegation also included the European Union’s Ambassador to Pakistan, Dr. Riina Kionka, signifying the high level of engagement and the importance of the discussions.
