Islamabad: Pakistan’s ambition to transform into a major regional connectivity center took center stage at the 14th meeting of the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs. Chaired by Ms. Hina Rabbani Khar, the committee discussed strategies to bolster trade and connectivity with Central Asian nations, alongside Pakistan’s recent diplomatic activities on both global and regional platforms.
Committee members present included Mr. Muhammad Khan Daha, Ms. Nuzhat Sadiq, Ms. Shaista Pervaiz, Ms. Farah Naz Akbar, Ms. Ayesha Nazir, Ms. Shazia Marri, Mr. Isphanyar M. Bhandara, and Dr. Muhammad Farooq Sattar.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) briefed the committee on potential trade and transit routes, emphasizing how these pathways could establish Pakistan as a long-term connectivity nucleus. However, achieving this goal hinges on addressing certain operational obstacles. Ms. Khar stressed that consistent policy and decision-making are crucial for solidifying Pakistan’s standing as a reliable trade and transit associate, despite unchangeable geopolitical factors. The committee also emphasized the need to prioritize feasible projects.
The MoFA also updated the committee on recent high-level diplomatic engagements, noting a significant rise in Pakistan’s international outreach amidst global uncertainties. Recent regional events have reportedly reinforced partner countries’ confidence in Pakistan, solidifying its role in regional and international affairs. The committee applauded the mutual defense and security pact between Pakistan and Saudi Arabia, expressing optimism that it would further cement the bilateral partnership.
