Pakistan Advocates for Strict Implementation of Indus Water Treaty at UN Security Council

Islamabad, Pakistan has officially called for the strict implementation of the 1960 Indus Waters Treaty, highlighting the critical need to address the challenges posed by the looming water crisis. This call to action was made during a session of the United Nations Security Council, where Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Munir Akram, underscored the importance of revitalizing the Indus River basin, a vital source of food security for over 225 million people.

According to Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Ambassador Akram detailed Pakistan’s commitment to rejuvenating the Indus River basin through the launch of the Living Indus project. This multi-dimensional initiative aims to safeguard the water resources critical for the nation’s agriculture and the livelihood of its people, emphasizing the treaty’s role in managing the shared water resources between Pakistan and its neighbor, India.

The Indus Waters Treaty, brokered by the World Bank in 1960, has been a cornerstone of water distribution between the two countries. Pakistan’s recent move to call for its strict implementation at an international forum like the UN Security Council highlights the country’s proactive approach to mitigating water scarcity and ensuring the sustainable management of its vital water resources in the face of environmental changes and growing demand.
