Pakistan Advocates for Strengthened International Court of Justice Role at UN

Islamabad: Pakistan has called for a stronger role for the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in addressing global security threats and upholding justice, particularly in Palestine and Jammu and Kashmir. This appeal was made at the United Nations during a discussion on the “Report of the International Court of Justice” by Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Munir Akram.

According to Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Ambassador Akram highlighted the increasing relevance of the ICJ in on 26 Oct 2024 geopolitical climate. He pointed out the multiplying threats to global peace and security, along with violations of the UN Charter and its principles, underscoring the indispensable role of the ICJ.

Ambassador Akram emphasized the plight of peoples in Palestine and occupied Jammu and Kashmir, who he said are still subjected to foreign and colonial occupation, and denied their right to self-determination. He criticized the Security Council for being “virtually paralyzed” due to the frequent use and threat of veto power by some permanent members, praising the ICJ for upholding the principles of the UN Charter and international law.

In his statement, Ambassador Akram urged both the UN General Assembly and the Security Council to enhance the role of the ICJ in defending international law and maintaining global order, making a strong case for reinforced legal mechanisms to ensure justice and peace worldwide.
