New York: Addressing the UN Security Council, Pakistan emphasized the necessity of multilateral cooperation to resolve global issues, including the longstanding conflicts in Palestine and Jammu and Kashmir, highlighting the inadequacies of current international dynamics that favor powerful nations over equitable global governance.
According to Kashmir Media Service, Pakistani Ambassador Usman Jadoon critiqued the prevailing global order during a debate on multilateral cooperation, which was convened by Russia, the council’s president for July. Ambassador Jadoon pointed out the numerous global threats exacerbated by great power rivalries and a lack of adherence to the UN Charter’s principles, including the unresolved issues of Palestine and Jammu and Kashmir due to the council’s failures.
He outlined a vision for a just, democratic, and sustainable world order that adheres to the principles of the UN Charter, stressing the importance of self-determination, non-use of force, respect for state sovereignty, and non-interference. Jadoon also called for comprehensive reforms to address the socio-economic challenges faced by developing countries, exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic, ongoing conflicts, and climate change.
The debate also featured pointed exchanges between global powers. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov criticized the United States for undermining multilateralism through a “rules-based order” that he claimed compromised international law. In contrast, U.S. Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield accused Russia of hypocrisy and violating the UN Charter, particularly in its actions against Ukraine.
Chinese Ambassador Fu Cong also weighed in, criticizing the notion of a “rules-based international order” as a pretext for double standards and exceptions, and urged NATO to cease its expansionist activities and confrontational tactics.
The discussion underscored the polarized international political landscape and the urgent need for genuine multilateral cooperation to address global crises and conflicts effectively.
