Opposition Presses Modi for Clarity on U.S. Role in Kashmir Ceasefire

New Delhi: Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is facing increasing pressure from opposition parties to address allegations that U.S. President Donald Trump was involved in brokering the recent ceasefire with Pakistan. Modi notably omitted any mention of Trump’s claims in his latest public address.

The situation stems from statements made by Trump suggesting that trade incentives were used to resolve the longstanding conflict over Kashmir. Opposition parties, capitalizing on these claims, are questioning whether India has altered its traditional policy of refusing third-party mediation in the dispute.

Congress MP Jairam Ramesh criticized Modi’s silence on the matter, asserting that the prime minister’s address was overshadowed by Trump’s comments. Ramesh urged Modi to convene with political leaders to clarify India’s stance and discuss next steps in handling the Kashmir issue.

Ramesh emphasized the need for diplomatic efforts and unity in the coming months, dismissing simple rhetoric as inadequate in addressing the complex situation. His calls for concerted action reflect a broader demand for transparency from the government.

In a similar vein, Congress MP Randeep Singh Surjewala questioned the basis of the ceasefire with Pakistan, seeking confirmation from the Modi administration on whether it involved U.S. mediation. Surjewala challenged the government to uphold India’s established policy against third-party intervention.

Additionally, the Communist Party of India (Marxist) echoed the demand for a parliamentary session to discuss the ceasefire. General Secretary M.A. Baby highlighted concerns that Trump’s announcement of the ceasefire prior to any Indian government statement has intensified uncertainty over the issue.

The opposition’s insistence on clarity underscores the sensitive nature of foreign influence in India’s internal affairs, particularly regarding the Kashmir conflict. As pressure mounts, the government’s response remains keenly anticipated.
