Opposition Accuses Modi of Promoting Divisive Agenda in Independence Day Speech

New Delhi: In the aftermath of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Independence Day speech, opposition parties have sharply criticized his remarks, accusing him of fostering division and misrepresenting the legacy of BR Ambedkar, the architect of India’s constitution.

According to Kashmir Media Service, the Congress Party led the charge, with General Secretary Jairam Ramesh denouncing Modi’s reference to India’s civil code as a “communal civil code” during his address at the Red Fort. Ramesh argued that Modi’s comments were not only misleading but also disrespectful to Ambedkar’s contributions to legal reform in the 1950s, particularly concerning Hindu personal laws.

Further criticism came from the Communist Party of India (CPI), where General Secretary D. Raja characterized Modi’s speech as reflective of the RSS’s divisive agenda. Similarly, Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader Manoj Jha condemned Modi’s call for a “secular civil code,” interpreting it as an indication of a narrow and exclusionary political mindset.

These reactions highlight a deepening rift over Modi’s policies and rhetoric, which the opposition claims threaten the fabric of national unity and secularism in India.
