On pressure from global rights body, India ‘seeks’ report from police on Syed Ali Gilani’s besieged burial

Srinagar, September 13, 2021 (PPI-OT):In Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir, in face of mounting criticism over snatching of dead body of the late veteran Hurriyat leader, Syed Ali Gilani and its forcible burial in the dark of night by Indian forces’ personnel, the Indian Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has ‘sought’ a report from the police in this regard.

Police are preparing a report on “sequence of events” following the death of Syed Ali Gilani on September 1, Indian media reported. As per the report of daily The Hindu, the move follows after the Indian Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) sought a detailed report from the police on the burial of the former APHC chairman. The 92-year-old leader passed away on September 1 after prolonged illness at his Hyderpora residence in Srinagar during house detention. He was buried under military siege at Hyderpora graveyard alongside a mosque.

The Hindu reported that in the face of allegations by the family of Syed Ali Gilani about forcible burial, police released a series of videos of the burial and ablution, “but it could be independently verified as police prevented journalists from covering the burial that night.” The Hindu revealed that that a Geneva-based rights organisation has raised the issue of Syed Ali Gilani’s improper handling of burial with the Government of India.
