Srinagar, National Conference Vice President Omar Abdullah has openly criticized the Ratle power project agreement with Rajasthan, labeling it as a misappropriation of Jammu and Kashmir’s resources. Abdullah’s remarks came during a press conference in Srinagar, where he voiced strong opposition to the long-term arrangement that channels hydroelectric power generated in the region to Rajasthan.
According to Kashmir Media Service, Omar Abdullah raised concerns about the nature of the power project, which has been handed over to Rajasthan for a span of 40 years. He emphasized that directing electricity from local hydroelectric projects to another region is unacceptable and mentioned the possibility of contesting the issue in the Indian Supreme Court.
Abdullah remarked on the unprecedented duration of the power agreement and vowed to ensure the project’s benefits remain within Jammu and Kashmir once assembly elections are conducted in the region.
In addition to the Ratle power project, Abdullah discussed the review petition in the Indian Supreme Court regarding the Article 370 verdict. He stated that discussions are ongoing about aligning with the petitioners in this matter.
The National Conference Vice President also expressed disappointment over the delay in holding elections in Jammu & Kashmir and criticized the Election Commission of India’s role in this delay. He noted the Supreme Court’s intervention in the matter as unfortunate and indicative of the Commission’s failure.
NC spokesperson Sara Hayat Shah also condemned the Ratle power project agreement through her social media handle, describing it as a robbery of Jammu and Kashmir’s resources by the Indian government.
