Srinagar, Omar Abdullah, Vice-President of the National Conference (NC), has called for India and Pakistan to foster an environment conducive to dialogue to address and resolve ongoing issues between the two nations. His comments come at a time of political transitions in both countries, with impending new government formations.
According to Kashmir Media Service, Abdullah spoke with reporters in Srinagar, expressing his hopes for future diplomatic interactions between India and Pakistan. “There is a new government in place in Pakistan, and after the results on June 4, there will also be a new government in India, whoever forms it. But it is our hope that leaders of both countries will create an atmosphere for dialogue and resolve our mutual concerns and issues,” he stated.
Additionally, Abdullah highlighted concerns over the treatment of Muslims in India, particularly in the context of the ongoing election campaigns. He criticized the rhetoric used by some political leaders, which he believes unfairly targets Muslim communities by associating them solely with extremist ideologies. “Muslims are being targeted in every speech. Yesterday also, a BJP leader said this election is Modi versus Rahul and development versus jihad. You talk of jihad just to show that Muslims do not know anything other than jihad,” Abdullah remarked.
The NC leader emphasized that Muslims in India wish to participate in the country’s progress and development, questioning the fairness of labeling them with the tag of jihad. His remarks underline the tensions in the current political discourse and the need for inclusive policies that recognize the contributions of all citizens.
